Additional Programs and Services

Our school's curriculum is enhanced with enrichment in world language, art, music, physical education health, and library use.

Academic Curriculum

World Language

Grades 6-8
The program aims to teach long term Spanish language skills. Classes meet daily and utilize an online text which makes available a number of audio, video and interactive features conducive to learning a foreign language.

Spanish Classes

Grades K-5
This program is interactive Spanish instruction that blends fun activities, songs, and games. Students learn how to count, learn vocabulary, days of the week, months of the year, colors and simple Spanish verbs.

Art

Grades PK-8, weekly
Students get to experience different types of media at all grades level. They are introduced to the history and techniques of various artists and create art in the style of those artists.  Middle school art students also research artists of their choice and have the chance to use the artist's techniques. All students are offered opportunities to enter school, local and state art contests. Each year, one student's design is chosen for the cover of our school musical's program. Finally, every year a student is chosen as the "Art Student of the Year" and one of their pieces is framed and displayed in the school library.

Music

Grades PK-8
Throughout a student's career at St. Petronille, they have the opportunity to sing, perform, play recorder, and study music theory and music history. Preparation and participation at our weekly school Mass are a focus at all grade levels.

Physical Education and Health

P.E.

Students learn how to compete in a variety of games utilizing sportsmanship and Christian values. Examples of games include tennis, in line skating, basketball, and floor hockey.

Health

Grades 6-8, weekly

Library Services

Grades K-4, weekly
Students visit our school library each week. The goal of our library program is to encourage reading amongst our students. A part-time librarian and parent volunteers assist students in selecting books that challenge their reading abilities.  A variety of reading/learning activities including technology applications are part of the students library time.

Technology Resources

Technology is an important part of our curriculum at St. Petronille.  We believe it provides the tools necessary to help increase our students' critical thinking, as well as, to foster collaboration with other students both inside and beyond the classroom.  Students are expected to meet grade level technology standards and leave SPS as responsible, users of technology.

Grade 2-4

Beginning in Grade 2, we require our students to take a computer class. Our dedicated technology instructor teaches concepts such as keyboarding, computer and network operations, computer programming, and internet research and safety.  In addition, we give our students hands on experience with key software programs like Powerpoint, Excel, Word and Publisher.  By Grade 4, we are integrating Lego robotics into the curriculum.

Grade 5

In grade 5, we introduce Chromebooks into the classroom. These devices are used primarily to complement the in-class teaching and learning of English, Reading, and Social Studies. This introductory period allows students to gain a level of familiarity with the devices prior to being issued their own device in Grade 6.

Grades 6-8

Each student in Grades 6-8 is issued a Chromebook or Lenovo tablet to be used both within and outside the classroom at St. Petronille. The tablets are used for reading subject content (textbooks), note taking, conducting class projects, emailing the teachers, and handing in homework to their teachers. We believe such a program prepares students for the next level of their education.

Tablet Program

Support for the tablet program is provided by a full-time Director of Technology, who also assists the classroom teachers with technology integration.
