Students today need to develop the ability to retrieve and interpret information, and must begin in the elementary grades to master the skills and techniques necessary to achieve success.
Our library program supports and enhances classroom curriculum for grades K-8 while focusing on library and research skills in grades K-6. Students participate in traditional story times and quiet reading times. They learn to search the online catalog and refine their search techniques in reference resources. Students have the opportunity to discover the Dewey Decimal System, appreciate a variety of literature styles, and become lifelong readers.
Students in grades Kindergarten through Third Grade visit the library once a week in a small group of 15. Fourth and Fifth Graders visit the library every other week (about twice a month) for instruction. While one half of a class visits the library, the other half is working in the Computer Lab. Older students use the library for research and assignments in conjunction with their class curriculum.
Students have to opportunity to participate in statewide reading programs, specifically the Monarch Award program for grades K-3 and the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award program for grades 4-8. An annual fall book fair promotes independent reading of quality literature.
Our library utilizes the Spectrum5 (Follett) automation software for circulating, cataloging and inventory of materials.
Calendar information
Annually a book fair is held during the week of the fall parent/teacher conferences.
Each month students in grades 4-8 are invited to Lunch in the Library as we discuss the nominees for the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award.
Voting for the Monarch Award and the Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Award takes place in late February.
