Student Life

Student Activities

Students of all ages are encouraged to participate in the many activities and clubs offered at St. Petronille School.

Athletics

Students in grades 5-8 are eligible to participate in the following no-cut sports: cross country, volleyball, basketball and track and field. Visit our school Athletics page for more details.

Buddy Program

The Buddy program is St. Petronille’s mentorship program amongst PK4 year old/Kindergarten/Lower School students and the Middle School students. While some of the buddy activities are centered on specific subjects (e.g. Science buddies), most focus on mentorship, ensuring the younger students are comfortable in the school environment and know a friendly face among our older students.

Enrichment Clubs

Thanks to the St. Petronille Parent Organization and a group of very talented and enthusiastic teachers, Enrichment Clubs are offered to students in grades 3-6. These teacher sponsored clubs are designed to enhance the school curriculum and to provide a well-founded educational and social experience for all of our students.

The clubs provide and avenue of enrichment coupled with fun for both the student and the teacher. Examples of past clubs include: LEGO club, American Girl club, Cooking Club, LEGO Robotics, Chess Club, Math club and Puzzle Club, just to mention a few.

Enrichment Clubs are held once a week after school from 3:30-5:00 pm for a period of eight weeks beginning in January.

Fine Arts Programs

Thanks to the St. Petronille Parent Organization, Fine Arts performances are offered to students in grades K-8 throughout the year. These programs are designed to enhance the school arts curriculum. The programs are varied in content and performed by outside companies. In the past, programs have included Mad Science, Chinese Dancers, and theater performances.

Art in the Classroom

Another arts program the our students participate in is "Art in the Classroom." This program is for all grades. Students are given an overview about a famous piece of art and guided through an activity that incorporates either the style or the theme of the discussed piece.

School Musical or Play

St. Petronille puts on a school musical or play production and students audition to participate in this school-wide event. Practices for the production take place after school, as well as on the weekend. A typical performance schedule includes one school-wide performance followed by performances over 2 weekends. Learn more about our drama program.  Students are able to share a variety of talent and spend time working behind the scenes.  This production is a "must see" for the entire community!

Music Programs

Band for Today

In partnership with Band for Today (Naperville, IL), band instruction is available at St. Petronille for Grades 4-8. Beginning and Intermediate Bands meet for 1/2 hour group lessons during the school day. Advanced Band meets for 1/2 hour before school 3x a week.

Piano Lessons

Available for Grades K-3, half-hour piano lessons are available before school. Group Piano Instruction is also available.

Liturgical Choir and Band

This elective class is open to all 8th grade students who wish to meet three times a week during their lunch period. These students either sing or play a musical instrument during the many school masses and school prayer services.  Students gain skill and confidence as they blend their natural talents, while praising God.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments. Competitions are held in March.

The 2016 Varsity Science Olympiad Team competed at the Illinois State Science Olympiad Tournament held at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. The team as a whole placed 25 out of 46 participating schools. Individually, team members earned second place in Bridge Building and in Optics.
